Quick Tips to Handle Your Christmas or Holiday Shopping Like a Boss

Everyone loves  seeing how their Christmas presents bring smiles on people’s faces. However, fulfilling different wishes within a limited time and budget, will not happen without a strategy. If you are determined to find presents that will give this year’s festive season a joyful vibe even during these difficult times, this post offers you practical tips to avoid the last-minute rush, feeling overwhelmed by the number of available choices and overspending.

 1. Create a wishlist
Are you that person who always gets something for ‘everyone’ and ends up overspending? You can put a stop to it by making a gift wishlist for all whom you want to surprise this year based on their needs and interests and of course your budget. Identify your priorities. You likely have a group of people that you buy presents for every year, so focus on getting their presents first and based on the remaining budget, decide if you have enough money left to buy presents which are optional.

 2. Set Christmas budget
Before you set out on a shopping trip get your finances in order. Your Christmas budget needs to cover all the essential expenses, gifts and leave a little wiggle room for a few unexpected scenarios. To make things easier, start with a lump sum and split it into three parts. You can also periodically cross check your actual purchases to date to ensure you are still within your budget. Be as realistic as possible and resist the temptation to be attracted by shiny little things that may alter your plans at the last minute.

3. Avoid the overwhelm
Having a wide selection of products is exciting, however, it also makes Christmas shopping a bit of a challenge. Selecting from a vast number of options is hard work if you are unsure about what you are after. If you are shopping for clothes or accessories, you can narrow down the selection by focusing on color, theme or specific size. You can also focus on other aspects such as a specific cut or material. You can also ask them to checkout the website and let you know what they would like from that brand.

4. Consider needs and wants
Deciding between the practical and the emotional purchases is one of the classic Christmas shopping dilemmas. To balance it out, for each gift that is practical, buy another one that appeals to your loved ones’ desires. Keep in mind that the packaging can be the cherry on the sundae that makes the recepient feel extra special. Invest in nice wrapping paper or gift bags for that extra something.

 5. Price check
Christmas is the time when we all welcome a good bargain and there are many out there so if you know where to look, you can save yourself a generous amount. Online price checking tools such as Honey, Ibotta or Amazon’s holiday deals are bargain hunters’ favorites, though if you prefer smaller e-stores it is well worth checking for Christmas deals ahead of the festive season.

 6. Shortlist quality stores
If you are buying a specific kind of product or have a preference for a particular brand, do your homework and comparsion shop for the best deals based on your criteria. Compile a list of the relevant stores and bookmark their websites so you can easily compare the offer, deals and delivery conditions in case you cannot pick up the item in store.

 7. Create a shopping schedule
Planning for Christmas and shopping for all necessary items can take time. If you are shopping for many people or have a busy job, treat shopping as any other task in your schedule. Allocate a specific amount of time and dates when you will focus solely on buying gifts and take advantage of online promotions such as free shipping days which may save you a trip or more to a physcial store. Spreading your Christmas shopping over a period of time may help with pacing yourself and tracking your spending.

 Invest in experiences
Quality time with your loved ones makes for the best memories. Investing in experiences that are active, fun, culture seeking or wellness-oriented can sometimes be a good match or have a more lasting impact than the temporary thrill of material gifts. In addition, if you have a fast-paced lifestyle which allows little time to unplug kick back in style in comfortable pieces and relax, the festive season is a perfect timing for leisure in the company of loved ones.
